SPU:
The Split Marathon - Where Every Step is a Journey Through History

The starting gun echoed through the palace basement where Roman slaves once shuffled. Today, 5,000 runners followed the same ancient paths in the most scenic marathon in Europe. The route:

Mile 3: Through Diocletian's cellars, now lit with torch-like LEDs
Mile 10: Along the beach where Emperor Diocletian once kept his private baths
Mile 23: Up Marjan Hill's 300 stone steps (dubbed "The Gladiator Gauntlet")

Local legend Ante Krstulović, 78, ran his 40th consecutive race: "In 1985, I dodged Communist police to organize the first marathon. Now the mayor gives me the starting flag."
