The starting gun echoed through the palace basement where Roman slaves once shuffled. Today, 5,000 runners followed the same ancient paths in the most scenic marathon in Europe. The route:
• Mile 3: Through Diocletian's cellars, now lit with torch-like LEDs
• Mile 10: Along the beach where Emperor Diocletian once kept his private baths
• Mile 23: Up Marjan Hill's 300 stone steps (dubbed "The Gladiator Gauntlet")
Local legend Ante Krstulović, 78, ran his 40th consecutive race: "In 1985, I dodged Communist police to organize the first marathon. Now the mayor gives me the starting flag."
